On Saturday evening in Paris, law enforcement arrested two individuals suspected of involvement in the Louvre robbery that occurred last week. According to Le Figaro and its police sources, one suspect was apprehended at the «Roissy - Charles de Gaulle» airport while attempting to flee to Algeria.
The operation was conducted by a special unit that worked on the investigation for a week, involving over 100 detectives. The second suspect was detained by police in the Seine-Saint-Denis department.
Paris prosecutor Laetitia Bekker previously stated that the criminals left numerous traces in the robbed Apollo Gallery, including over 150 DNA samples and many fingerprints. She expressed optimism about the analysis results.
«The results we will receive in the coming days may lead us to new clues, especially if the suspects are already in our database», - the prosecutor added.
Additionally, surveillance footage helped reconstruct the robbers' escape route through Paris and neighboring departments. The police utilized recordings from public and private cameras located on highways, in banks, and other locations.
As of Sunday morning, eight royal jewels of France, valued by the museum curator at 88 million euros, have yet to be found.
It was reported that part of the Louvre's jewelry collection, specifically the ornaments displayed in the recently robbed Apollo Gallery, were moved to an underground vault at the Bank of France.
This audacious robbery took place on the morning of October 19. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the theft of jewels from the Louvre's Napoleon collection represents an attack on France's national heritage.
