Explosions in Southern Vilnius: Gas Station Fire

On the morning of September 10, powerful explosions were heard in the southern outskirts of Vilnius due to the ignition of several railway tankers filled with liquefied gas.

This was reported by LRT.

The fire broke out at the Baltosės Vokės gas refueling station, where, according to preliminary information, eight gas wagons caught fire.

"Preliminary reports indicate that the fire was caused by a violation of workplace safety regulations. The police have implemented the 'Shield' plan," said Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovich at a press conference.

One person was injured in the incident, and witnesses claim that black smoke was visible from several kilometers away. Local residents also noted that explosions were heard at the scene.

According to media sources, the fire occurred on the premises of the UAB Jozita gas station network, with the burning wagons belonging to Orlen Lietuva. Numerous firefighting units are on-site, and the fire is still ongoing. The Vilnius authorities warned of possible air pollution in the city. Donatas Guraivicius, advisor to the Director of the Fire Safety and Rescue Department, confirmed that the gas distribution station was on fire where cargo operations were taking place. He stated that the sounds of explosions heard at the scene are characteristic of liquefied gas combustion. Currently, efforts are focused on cooling the tanks to prevent a simultaneous explosion after the fire spread from the wagons. The total capacity of all tanks is 2000 cubic meters, and the tankers involved in the fire continue to burn, with their gas having been consumed.

"The heat is immense, and firefighting is being carried out with water. Firefighters cannot approach yet due to the explosions of the wagons," he reported.

The police have cordoned off access to the area, but there are no residential buildings nearby. An evacuation has been announced within a one-kilometer radius.
