Increase in GPS Disruption Incidents in the Baltic Sea

A sharp increase in incidents related to GPS signal interference has been reported in the Baltic Sea, attributed to jamming sources located in Russia.

This was reported by the Center for Counteracting Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine via Telegram.

«On September 4, the Swedish transport agency Transportstyrelsen announced a significant rise in GPS disruption incidents in the Baltic Sea. This year, there were 733 registered cases, compared to 495 in 2024 and only 55 in 2023. Experts say that the jamming sources are situated within Russian territory,» the report states.

The European Commission notes that this issue is becoming systemic. In just 2025, 13 EU member states reported almost daily occurrences of jamming and signal spoofing. According to the Estonian regulator's estimates, 85% of flights in the country face navigation disruptions. There is an observed increase in the number of Russian electronic warfare installations near the borders with the Baltic states, Poland, and Finland.

The Center emphasized that Russia's systematic interference with GPS operations poses a threat to civilian air travel and international security. Such hybrid attacks are part of a broader Russian strategy aimed at undermining Europe’s resilience and reducing support for Ukraine through public intimidation.

FT reported that Russian electronic jamming forced a plane carrying the President of the European Commission to land in Plovdiv using paper maps.
