The Paris authorities reopened the Seine River for public swimming on Saturday morning, marking the first time since 1923.
According to France24, this is a significant development for the city.
Seine: First Swimming in a Century
Residents and visitors to the French capital can enjoy a swim in the Seine this summer, weather permitting, at three designated swimming spots.
One of these spots is just a short walk from the Eiffel Tower.
On Saturday morning, dozens of people arrived for the river's opening — at 8 a.m. local time — to take a dip in the Bras-Mari area in the historic center of the city.
The swimming zones, which can accommodate 150 to 300 individuals, are equipped with changing rooms, showers, and beach-style furniture.
Paris officials stated that several measures were taken to ensure swimmers' safety, including daily water quality testing and a swimming test for bathers.
Ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris last year, authorities invested approximately 1.4 billion euros to improve water quality in the Seine.
The swimming areas will remain open until August 31.
