Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected as the new president of the UN General Assembly for a one-year term.
This was announced by the current president of the assembly, Philemon Yang, according to the German publication Spiegel.
Annalena Baerbock Leads the UN General Assembly
It is reported that during a secret ballot, 167 UN member states supported Baerbock's candidacy. She was the only candidate for this prestigious position.
However, due to the initiative of one of the organization's participants, the election was held in a secret voting format rather than by acclamation, as is often the case when there is a single candidate.
According to diplomatic sources from Spiegel, this voting format was initiated by the Russian Federation, which openly opposed Baerbock's candidacy, accusing her of “bias.”
As head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Baerbock repeatedly condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine. She consistently called for a tough policy towards the Kremlin, which often provoked sharp negative reactions from the Russian authorities.
Annalena Baerbock Aimed to Run for President of the UN General Assembly
Previously, Baerbock planned to run for the position of UN General Assembly president, noting that this was in line with many of her predecessors who were also former foreign ministers or prime ministers.
In January, Baerbock criticized the German government for its indecisiveness regarding assistance to Ukraine.
She emphasized that Germany is losing the opportunity to be a leader in establishing peace in Europe, which deeply concerns her. She believes that some politicians are focused on domestic issues and upcoming elections instead of taking responsibility for peace and freedom in Europe.
