The operatives of the Security Service of Ukraine, together with the National Police, have apprehended an individual responsible for the terrorist act that occurred on September 14 in the Zhytomyr region.
The attacker detonated a homemade explosive device in the Korostyshiv area, leading to the death of a 34-year-old local resident.
The suspect was detained just 8 hours after the incident.
It turned out that the terrorist was a 31-year-old resident of Zhytomyr, who was struggling with drug addiction and was recruited by Russian special services through Telegram while seeking money for drugs.
In exchange for promises of quick earnings, he agreed to carry out the attack. To do this, he rented an apartment in Zhytomyr and bought all the necessary components for the explosives under the guise of regular household purchases.
Following instructions from his Russian handlers, he manufactured the explosive device, equipped it with a mobile phone for remote detonation, and disguised it as a fire extinguisher.
The explosive was hidden, and to track the victim's arrival at the attack site, the terrorist installed a camera with remote access.
During the search, the detained individual was found with a phone containing evidence of his contacts with Russian special services.
The Security Service of Ukraine has charged him under Part 3 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act resulting in death).
The perpetrator is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with property confiscation.
These measures were carried out in cooperation with the National Police under the supervision of the regional prosecutor's office.
