Google Unveils Guided Learning Tool for Students

image

Google has launched an innovative tool called Guided Learning within its Gemini chatbot, aimed at providing step-by-step education for students. This feature competes with the recently introduced ChatGPT Study mode by OpenAI, as reported by Fast Company.

Unlike typical chatbots that offer instant responses, Guided Learning breaks down complex answers into manageable parts for a deeper understanding of the material. Instead of providing direct answers, the system guides users towards comprehension through a series of thoughtful questions. This tool addresses concerns within the AI industry about chatbots undermining education by offering quick fixes without a learning process.

Students can ask the AI questions at any time. In response, Guided Learning typically provides contextual hints that encourage independent searching for answers, often rephrasing the query instead of solving it immediately. If a student strays off topic, the AI acknowledges their interests but gently steers them back to the main content.

While most responses from Guided Learning are text-based, some queries generate illustrations and suggest relevant YouTube videos from educational experts. Students can upload notes or course syllabi, allowing the tool to customize interactions based on the material being studied.

The launch of Guided Learning is part of Google's $1 billion educational initiative over three years focused on AI in education. College students aged 18 and older in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil will receive a free 12-month subscription to the Google AI Pro plan.

The Google AI for Education Accelerator program will provide free AI training, Google Career certificates, and enhanced AI tools to college students nationwide. Over 100 universities representing millions of students have already signed up for the program.
