New Registration System for Genetically Modified Organisms in Ukraine

Ukraine has approved a new system for registering genetically modified organisms, aimed at improving consumer safety.

This information was disclosed by the press service of the Ministry of Agricultural Policy.

The new system will serve as a single source of information, allowing for the tracking, monitoring, and storage of data on all registered GMOs in Ukraine.

The ministry explained that establishing such a registry is a vital step towards ensuring transparency in the biotechnology sector, improving consumer safety, and meeting Ukraine's commitments under the EU agreement.

Moreover, this decision aligns Ukrainian legislation with European regulations regarding GMOs, specifically Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment.

This will create a regulatory system for monitoring and recording that is similar to the European model, reducing risks to human health and the environment.

The decree will come into effect in September 2026, simultaneously with a new law governing genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
