New Energy Storage Facility in Ukraine

A new energy storage facility has commenced operations in Ukraine, capable of supplying electricity to 600,000 households for 2 hours.

This has been reported by the Ministry of Energy.

"Ukraine has launched the largest energy storage system with a capacity of 200 MW, developed by DTEK in partnership with the American company Fluence Energy B.V. The facility consists of 6 sites located in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, built in a record time of just one year. The investment in the project was €125 million," the report states.

It is noted that the facility can store 400 MWh of electricity, sufficient to meet the needs of 600,000 households for two hours.

"The new capacities enhance the reliability and flexibility of the energy system, reduce the risks of emergency shutdowns, and allow for effective preparation for the winter season. This also opens new opportunities for the development of renewable energy and the decentralization of the energy system," commented Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk.

Thus, storage systems provide Ukraine with additional capabilities for balancing the energy system and regulating frequency, which is especially important given the growing share of renewable sources and the ongoing challenges of war.

From October 7, 2025, the Market Operator will begin testing a platform that will assess the economic viability of energy storage installations in various segments of the energy market. According to forecasts from NEC "Ukrenergo", in the next 10 years, the Ukrainian energy system will require 1.5 GW of energy storage systems.
