A large wildfire near the border with Spain in France has resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
This has been reported by the Associated Press.
Approximately 1,800 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze that ignited on Tuesday in the village of Ribot in the Aude region. As of Wednesday, the fire remained «very active», with adverse weather conditions reported by local authorities.
One individual died in their home, while nine others were injured, including seven firefighters. At least one person is still missing.
The fire has engulfed an area exceeding 12,000 hectares, which is larger than the size of Paris. Consequently, this wildfire is the largest in France this summer.
Residents and tourists have been advised to stay indoors unless instructed to evacuate. Two campsites have been evacuated for safety reasons.
This summer, Southern Europe has experienced several major wildfires. Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heatwaves and droughts, making the region more susceptible to wildfires.
