The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is launching the K4 Startup Studio initiative aimed at supporting military startups in the field of artificial intelligence. The primary goal of this program is to develop technological solutions that can provide an advantage in combat situations. This initiative is implemented with the support of the Federal Ministry of Defense of Germany and the Office of Effective Regulation (BRDO).
K4 represents a new approach to collaboration between the state and entrepreneurs: the program unites developers, military specialists, and international mentors.
The Ministry has identified 4 key challenges that require urgent solutions. Teams can submit their proposals for participation in the program, as well as present their own ideas for AI solutions in the defense sector. A complete list of challenges is available on the website: k4.mod.gov.ua.
The selection of participants will take place in several stages. Up to 10 teams will apply, from which 4 will receive grants of $250,000 for each solution. Teams will be evaluated twice by a special committee consisting of military experts and users of new technologies.
Initially, teams will undergo a 4-month intensive development program: mentorship from leading experts, testing solutions in combat conditions, and receiving feedback from military personnel. Following this, they will receive 6 months of individualized support, which should culminate in attracting investments or signing a government contract.
The K4 Startup Studio model is based on successful accelerator practices. The main advantage for startups is direct contact with end users and the ability to implement their solutions into the real defense system. For investors, this means quick access to technologies tested in wartime conditions.

K4 is a program for those ready to turn their code into weapons in the hands of our defenders,” says Kateryna Chernogorenko, Deputy Minister of Defense for Digital Development.
