Honoring Oksana Voronina: A New Chapter for a Street in Kyiv

image

The brilliant and talented actress Oksana Voronina shone on the stage of the National Theater named after Lesya Ukrainka and in cinema. Her life was tragically cut short in 2020, but her artistic legacy continues to thrive in the cultural memory.

In recent years, the Kyiv City Council has been actively renaming streets associated with aggression and the Soviet past. Among these changes was the renaming of Metalistiv Lane in the Solomianskyi district.

This lane emerged in the early 20th century in the historic area of Kazenni Dachi. Until 1955, it was known as Pitrivskyi Lane, later adopting the name Metalistiv.

The majority of its low-rise buildings were lost back in the 1980s, so today only building No. 1 remains.

Due to the unclear origin of the name “Metalistiv,” the lane was included in the list for renaming.

From June 15 to 19, 2022, an electronic voting took place on the “Kyiv Digital” platform. The proposal to rename the lane in honor of actress Oksana Voronina received the most support — 6,833 votes. Voronina, who had been performing at the National Theater since 2001, became a symbol of Ukrainian theatrical art.
