It is expected that in 2025, 75-80 thousand second-year students will undergo basic military training at universities.
This information was announced by the Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, during a question hour with the government.
Military Training for Students 2025: New Details from the Ministry of Education
Students will start their basic military training on September 1 of this year, which will consist of both practical and theoretical courses.
“We anticipate that 75-80 thousand students will be male second-year students. Female students can join voluntarily,” said Oksen Lisovyi.
According to the minister, the theoretical part of the basic military training program has already been launched in universities.
“The theoretical component, which we are preparing to implement in 2025, has already begun in all universities. 170 educational programs have been developed and submitted for approval to the General Staff,” he added.
Consultations with the Ministry of Defense are currently ongoing regarding the content and format of the practical component, which is set to start in May 2026.
Oksen Lisovyi emphasized that there is no additional funding for this program. It will be financed from the reserves of the Ministry of Education.
“The need for the program's implementation in 2025 is estimated at 130 million hryvnias. We hope to receive some additional funding during the revision of the state budget,” he said.
What Does Basic Military Training Include?
The basic military training for students at higher educational institutions will be introduced on September 1, 2025.
It will cover a range of military training disciplines, including psychological, reconnaissance, tactical, and fire training.
The course will consist of two parts - theoretical and practical.
Both men and women will undergo the theoretical training.
The practical course will be mandatory only for men, while women may participate voluntarily.
Deputy Minister of Defense Serhiy Melnyk stated that basic military training is mandatory for all students in higher educational institutions.
He noted that students who fail the exam in this discipline or refuse to take the oath will not be allowed to continue their studies at the higher educational institution.
