New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani reported that at least 18 people died during January's extreme cold weather. This was highlighted by BBC.
"According to the mayor, 18 fatalities occurred during this period of harsh cold," the statement reads.
Throughout the month, the city experienced 13 consecutive days with temperatures below zero degrees Celsius, marking one of the longest stretches of cold weather in six decades.
Although temperatures are expected to rise this week, they remain below average, and Mamdani urged New Yorkers to «stay safe, stay home, and continue to care for one another».
He added that since January 19, when a blue code emergency was declared easing shelter admission rules for the homeless, around 1,400 individuals have been accommodated in city shelters.
64 additional hotel rooms have been added to the shelters, and at least 150 outreach workers are on the streets, Mamdani stated.
On January 27, he reported that at least 10 deceased individuals were found on the streets. The circumstances surrounding the other deaths are currently unknown.
From December 20, 2025, to January 18, 2026, 1,103 Ukrainians sought emergency medical assistance for frostbite and hypothermia, with 1,016 hospitalized.
