The United Kingdom is introducing artificial intelligence technologies to combat fraudsters who call from fake numbers. According to the Financial Times, major mobile operators including BT EE, Vodafone, Three, and Virgin Media O2 plan to upgrade their networks within a year to block spoofed calls.
With the implementation of AI, it will be possible to detect and block suspicious calls and messages.
Additionally, operators have committed to enhancing data sharing by implementing advanced call tracking technologies, enabling police to gather more information to trace offenders.
Spoofing allows fraudsters from overseas call centers to create the illusion that they are calling from UK numbers similar to those used by banks and police.
These numbers instill greater trust in potential victims, making them more susceptible to fraud. Research indicates that 96% of people decide whether to answer a call based on the displayed number. Meanwhile, the likelihood of answering an international number is significantly lower.
