As a result of unexpected floods in central Texas, 24 individuals have died.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Laita confirmed during a press conference on Friday evening that the death toll stands at 24.

According to officials, over 230 people were rescued or evacuated on Friday, with most operations involving helicopters.

Heavy rainfall on Friday triggered sudden floods along the Guadalupe River in south-central Texas, resulting in fatalities and leaving nearly two dozen children missing from a summer camp near the river.

«It happened very quickly, in less than two hours, and we couldn’t predict this event even with radar assistance», remarked Kerrville Mayor Dalton Rice.

He added that the flash flooding occurred before dawn, preventing local officials from issuing timely evacuation orders. The water level in the Guadalupe rose rapidly above the flood stage.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Laita initially reported that 13 bodies had been found due to the severe weather. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick clarified during a briefing that some bodies of adults and children were located in vehicles swept away by the current.

Authorities also mentioned they are searching for 23 girls who are considered missing. They were staying at a summer camp near the Guadalupe River, which was flooded around 4 AM local time.

«We are praying for the safe return of all missing individuals», added Lieutenant Governor Patrick.
