Pope Leo XIV: A New Chapter in Catholicism

image

The Vatican has elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevot as the new Pope, taking the name Leo XIV.

Details: At 69 years old, Prevot is the first Pope from the USA, chosen by the conclave just two days after it began. He was made a cardinal by the late Pope Francis in 2023.

The Vatican has traditionally been cautious about electing a Pope from the USA due to the country’s global influence. Prevot’s extensive experience in leadership roles and his missionary work in Peru, where he served as bishop, likely contributed to his selection.

He is known for his moderate views within the Catholic Church and is expected to carry on the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

Prior favorites for the papacy included Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, French Jean-Marc Aveline, Hungarian Peter Erdő, and Italian Pierbattista Pizzaballa.

The conclave began on May 7, and the date was set during a closed meeting of cardinals in the Vatican, following the funeral of Pope Francis on April 26.
