On May 8, a conclave in the Vatican has elected a new Pope – this is confirmed by the white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel.

Details: The conclave, which convened on Wednesday, reached a consensus on the new Pope on the second day of voting.

The name of the new leader of the Catholic Church will be announced later.

Among the favorites were the Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and the Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. Other potential candidates included Jean-Marc Aveline from France, Peter Erdő from Hungary, Robert Prevost from the USA, and Pierbattista Pizzaballa from Italy.

The date of the conclave was set during a closed meeting of the cardinals in the Vatican, the first since the funeral of Pope Francis on April 26.
