The leaders of Canada's political parties, including Liberal leader Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, discussed which party would provide more support for Ukraine if elected in the upcoming elections.
According to "European Truth", during the debates, they were asked what Canada could do for Ukraine if the United States decided to withdraw. Poilievre was the first to respond, emphasizing the need to continue support for Ukraine.
He believes that Canada should not blindly follow U.S. policies. "If they make mistakes, we should stand firm and work with our allies. Regarding Ukraine, this includes military assistance, but also efforts to diminish Putin's influence," he stated.
Poilievre also pointed out that the Kremlin currently holds significant power over the European energy market, accusing the Liberals of blocking Canadian gas exports to Europe.
He expressed his intention to quickly advance projects for gas exports to reduce Europe's energy dependency on Russia.
Carney, for his part, emphasized that Canada has always been a reliable ally for Ukraine, noting that Canadians have actively supported Ukrainians in their homes and through other means.
He reminded that Canada joined the international coalition supporting Ukraine in the first month of his premiership, when the U.S. hesitated to take active measures.
"This is an example of how the new world should look, with Canada taking an active role in helping other countries," he added.
Carney also stressed the importance of maintaining open trade, noting that his opponent voted against the free trade agreement with Ukraine.
"This means help for Ukraine. Does Poilievre want to cut aid to Ukraine? He hasn't mentioned this support. We must stand by Ukraine," Carney concluded.
Remember, the snap elections in Canada are set for April 28.
The question of Canada-U.S. relations will be a key issue in this campaign, where Liberals led by Carney will compete against Poilievre's Conservative Party.
