False Status Cancellation Notices Sent to Ukrainians in the US

This week, some Ukrainians residing in the US under a humanitarian program received emails notifying them of the cancellation of their status.

According to Reuters, these individuals were alarmed by messages stating they had seven days to leave the country or face potential consequences.

"If you do not leave the United States immediately, you may become subject to potential law enforcement actions leading to your removal from the US. Your humanitarian status is being terminated. Do not attempt to remain in the United States," the message read.

However, a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that these emails were sent in error and that the program for Ukrainians established after the Russian invasion remains in place. The exact number of recipients is currently unknown.

On the same day, the Department sent out a follow-up email stating that the prior notification was incorrect and that "your humanitarian status conditions remain unchanged at this time."

It is worth noting that in January, following Donald Trump's inauguration, officials ordered a halt to several programs that allowed migrants to temporarily reside in the United States, including a key initiative that facilitated entry for Ukrainians.
