The Ministry of Education and Science is actively working to introduce the Ukrainian language into international schools as a foreign language.
This statement was made by the Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, during the "Hour of Questions to the Government" in Parliament.
According to him, there are currently 340,000 Ukrainian students living abroad. In many cases, Ukrainian children are forced to learn the language of the host country, English, and often a third foreign language, which is sometimes Russian.
"We understand that the Ukrainian language as a foreign language has great potential, and we are negotiating with various partner countries, receiving support from many education ministries.
The proposal involves teaching Ukrainian as a language for foreigners from the basics, which is a rational step to relieve the burden on our children, and we are actively working on this", said Lisovyi.
He also added that the ministry has "made several initiatives" in preparation for this, particularly working on developing relevant standards.
When asked about the possibility of implementing Ukrainian language instruction abroad in the next academic year, Oksen Lisovyi replied that it would depend on the success of negotiations with each country.
"We will definitely achieve some progress with several countries, such as Poland, where the largest number of our children reside", the Minister of Education and Science believes.
Earlier, the Ministry of Education and Science reported that as of January 2025, over 355,000 Ukrainian children abroad are simultaneously studying in Ukrainian schools (remotely) and educational institutions in their host countries.
