The European Union is providing Ukraine with a new shipment of emergency generators from its strategic reserves in response to Russian strikes on energy facilities. According to the European Commission's press service, this initiative aims to restore electricity supply in the country.
«Over a million Ukrainians are left without electricity, water, and heating in freezing temperatures due to relentless Russian attacks. The European Commission is deploying 447 emergency generators, worth 3.7 million euros, today to restore power to hospitals, shelters, and critical services», the statement reads.
The generators, mobilized from rescEU strategic reserves and located in Poland, will be distributed by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ukrainian Red Cross among the most affected communities.
The European Commission also reminded that since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, the EU has sent approximately 10,000 generators to Ukraine through the Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). Ahead of this winter, the European Commission successfully relocated a complete thermal power station donated by Lithuania as part of the largest coordinated logistical operation in the history of the Mechanism.
«The European Commission strongly condemns Russia's attacks on critical energy infrastructure and the humanitarian damage they cause. The EU will not allow Russia to freeze Ukraine into submission and will continue to assist Ukrainians in getting through this winter», the statement emphasizes.
The First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, reported that Ukraine has recently received over 50 tons of equipment for the energy sector.
