In Kharkiv, the counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine apprehended a Russian agent attempting to plant explosives in a city park. According to the SBU press center.
The detainee acted on the orders of the FSB of Russia.
It is reported that he received coordinates for an arms cache, from which he retrieved a grenade, and later acquired inconspicuous fishing line to connect to the grenade's fuse.
As noted by the security service, the explosion aimed to incite panic among the city's residents.
SBU officers timely uncovered the criminal intentions and arrested the terrorist at the planned detonation site.
The investigation revealed that a 62-year-old local man, who was recruited through his wife living in Moscow and working for the Russian intelligence, was executing the orders.
It was also documented that after setting the booby trap, the agent intended to carry out another FSB task, specifically to construct an improvised explosive device (IED) using plastic explosives.
During searches at the detainee's residence, a phone for triggering explosives, a radio, a smartphone, and a tablet with evidence of his contacts with the enemy were confiscated.
The SBU investigators charged the agent under part 2 of Article 111 (treason in wartime) and part 1 of Article 14, part 2 of Article 258 (preparation for a terrorist act by prior conspiracy of a group of persons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The suspect is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
