Celebrating the Day of Ukrainian Language and Literacy

In Ukraine, October 27 is celebrated as the Day of the Ukrainian Language and Literacy.

This day was established on November 6, 1997, following an initiative from public organizations, with a decree № 1241/97 signed by then-President Leonid Kuchma.

Previously, it was observed on November 9, coinciding with the day of remembrance for St. Nestor the Chronicler according to the Julian calendar. However, after Ukraine adopted a new ecclesiastical calendar in 2023, all fixed holidays shifted by 13 days. As a result, the day honoring St. Nestor and Ukrainian Language Day are now celebrated on October 27.

Every year, various events are held in Ukraine to promote the Ukrainian language both domestically and internationally. A traditional highlight is the National Unity Dictation. This year, the text will be read by actress Natalia Sumska, and the author will be writer Yevheniya Kuznetsova.

Last year, over half a million people participated in the National Unity Dictation via Suspilne platforms, with around 10,000 submissions coming in from more than 30 countries for verification.
