Prevention of Arms Smuggling from Ukraine

The Security Service of Ukraine has thwarted an attempt to illegally export crucial components for artillery systems from the country.
This concerns various artillery systems, including six-barrel AО-18 and universal models AK-176M worth nearly 1.5 million USD.
Such weapons are used on combat ships to hit fast-moving targets like drones and cruise missiles at short distances.
Investigations revealed that a businessman from Mykolaiv was involved, having unlawfully acquired this weaponry during the war.
To conceal the smuggling, he hid the arms in specially made containers resembling water heaters.
The perpetrator intended to transport these systems to EU and Southeast Asian countries, and from there to the aggressor country, by entering into fictitious agreements with foreign companies.

Officers of the SBU apprehended the suspect during the preparatory stage of the smuggling operation.

During searches at his warehouses and offices, the following was seized:

  •  artillery systems in specially designed containers;
  •  additional components for military boats;
  •  contracts with foreign enterprises.

The seized weapons will be transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Security Service has charged the suspect under Articles 14 and 201 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (preparation for arms smuggling). He is in custody and faces up to 12 years in prison with asset confiscation. The investigation is ongoing.
