Enhancing Public Transport Accessibility for People with Disabilities

Approximately one-third of public transport drivers have undergone training to enhance service quality for passengers with mobility challenges, according to Kyivpastrans.

The training covers principles of accessibility, effective communication with passengers, and procedures for safely boarding and alighting individuals using wheelchairs or other assistive devices.

“Our drivers are experienced professionals. However, given the complexities of today’s environment, it is crucial to continually upgrade their skills and learn new approaches to accessibility. This will help drivers better understand the needs of individuals with disabilities and provide comfortable travel conditions for all residents and visitors of the capital,” stated Tatiana Tarasco, Acting General Director of Kyivpastrans.

The training sessions are conducted in collaboration with the NGO “Active Rehabilitation Group” and consist of lectures and practical exercises simulating real-life situations on routes.

“Practice is a vital component of our training programs. During these sessions, drivers practice their responses to common situations on routes. This not only reinforces their foundational knowledge but also teaches them to react effectively to various passenger requests. I am confident that post-training, service delivery for individuals using assistive devices will significantly improve,” emphasized Alexey Porokh, an instructor from the Active Rehabilitation Group.

Classes are held daily, excluding weekends, gradually involving all drivers of the company. The series of training sessions was initiated by Ulyana Pcholkin, Deputy Chair of the Active Rehabilitation Group and an inclusion expert.
