On Wednesday, August 6, the National Circus of Ukraine announced the passing of Stanislav Bakhstasovych Filipenko — a legendary circus performer, director, and mentor who dedicated his life to the art. He was 87 years old.
Stanislav Filipenko was born on July 8, 1938. He began his career in circus arts in 1956, right after finishing school. For 26 years, he worked as an artist in the «State Circus» system, mastering several complex genres — from juggling and acrobatics to equilibristics and animal training. He performed with leading troupes in Ukraine and abroad, notably in the first program of the Kyiv State Circus «For You, Kyiv Residents».
In 1983, Stanislav Filipenko joined the folk circus «Youth of Kyiv», starting as a rehearsal director and later leading the troupe. His students remember him as a wise mentor who knew how to connect with each child and ignite their passion for circus arts. Thanks to his efforts, «Youth of Kyiv» became one of the most successful amateur circus groups in Ukraine, achieving victories at numerous international and national festivals.
Filipenko's teaching career produced hundreds of talented artists who now perform in arenas across Ukraine, Europe, Canada, and the USA. Four of his students worked in the world-renowned circus «Du Soleil», and overall, more than 20 dynasties of artists emerged from his studio.
For the last 15 years, he also taught at the Kyiv Municipal Academy of Variety and Circus Arts while continuing to lead «Youth of Kyiv».
For his contributions to cultural development, Stanislav Filipenko received numerous awards, including the Artistic Prize «Kyiv» in the field of circus arts named after the Yalovy brothers, as well as honorary certificates from the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the capital's Department of Culture, and the Pechersk District Administration.
The farewell ceremony for the artist will take place at Baykove Cemetery. Details of the ceremony will be announced later.
Condolences to the family...
