The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported explosions and smoke coming from a support facility near the plant on Saturday.
This information was confirmed by the IAEA.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the administration of the Zaporizhzhia NPP reported ongoing shelling of the facility, including drone strikes, starting from 9:00 AM.
The facility is located 1200 meters away from the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
This incident is part of a series of events in recent weeks that highlight the potential threats to nuclear safety amid the ongoing military conflict.
Grossi emphasized, "Any attack near a nuclear power plant... poses a serious threat to nuclear safety and must be avoided."
He reiterated calls for maximum military restraint around nuclear facilities to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.
Additionally, Yuriy Sheiko, the First Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, stated that Russia cannot ensure the safe operation of the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP and is using such claims to blackmail Ukraine and the international community.
Forty-eight IAEA member states issued a joint statement asserting that any restart of reactors at the Zaporizhzhia NPP can only occur after the facility is returned to the legitimate control and oversight of the competent Ukrainian regulator.
