In the works of the artist, Kyiv emerges not just as a metropolis, but as a realm filled with light and tranquility, where each church and street represents a place of power.
The Memorial House of Mykhailo Starytsky currently hosts an exhibition of Lyuda Kovalchuk, dedicated to the sacred image of Kyiv — a city that breathes history through every building.
In a series of landscapes, the artist reveals Kyiv as a space of spiritual presence, where architecture becomes a prayer and light symbolizes hope. Her works are not merely depictions; they are visual meditations connecting reality with metaphor.
“I paint not just buildings, but the silence between them. For me, Kyiv is not a city, but a state of the soul,” says Lyuda Kovalchuk.
On the canvases, one can see familiar yet refreshed images: St. Andrew's Church shrouded in morning mist, the Golden Gates in autumn light, silhouettes of the Lavra against the backdrop of the evening sky. Each piece serves as a window into the inner Kyiv, the one that lives in memory, in dreams, in silence.
“The landscapes of Lyuda Kovalchuk are not just representations of the city; they are its inner portrait. In each canvas lies not only architecture but also mood, light, and the silence that envelops Kyiv at different times of the day and year. Her Kyiv breathes, listens, remembers. These landscapes do not illustrate but interpret the sacred space of the capital. They are emotional — like memories, like dreams,” remarked representatives of the Mykhailo Starytsky Museum.
The curators also emphasized that within the walls of Mykhailo Starytsky's house, Lyuda Kovalchuk's works resonate deeply: they continue the tradition of seeing Kyiv not just as a capital but as a symbol, a witness, and a source of inspiration. We are delighted to share this vision with our visitors.
