In Ukraine, an average of 240 fires are reported daily, resulting in approximately four fatalities and five injuries.
This was reported by Roman Tsiren, head of the Department for Emergency Prevention at the State Emergency Service, during a briefing at the "Media Center Ukraine".
According to Tsiren, these figures represent "alarming statistics" when viewed annually.
"On average, around two thousand citizens die each year due to fires, and five thousand may be injured," he noted.
The State Emergency Service has urged Ukrainians to refrain from lighting bonfires in nature during the Easter celebrations.
"Our country's territory has suffered greatly from explosive devices. Many have been found even in de-occupied areas.
Especially if forests and parks are being used, I do not recommend lighting fires, as this year has seen a significant increase in ecosystem fires. There is currently a 68% rise in fires in ecosystems," explained Roman Tsiren.
Losses from emergencies also include deaths and injuries from traffic accidents, says Tsiren.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, nearly 26,000 accidents with casualties occurred in 2024. Over 3,200 people died and more than 32,000 were injured. This is a 5-9% increase compared to 2023.
As reported by Oleksiy Biloshytskyi, the first deputy head of the Patrol Police Department, the most common cause of traffic accidents with casualties is speeding, accounting for nearly 39.4% of cases.
Other common causes of accidents include violations of maneuvering rules, crossing intersections and pedestrian crossings, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.
"When you add traffic accidents, in which six thousand of our citizens die, it represents colossal losses for our society," concluded the head of the Department for Emergency Prevention.
It is worth noting that only 55 Ukrainians died from domestic fires in the first six days of 2025. Fires have occurred due to electrical short circuits, non-compliance with heating device regulations, and careless handling of fire, including smoking in bed while intoxicated.
