According to analytics firm Appfigures, ChatGPT became the world's most downloaded app in March, overtaking Instagram and TikTok, which typically held the top spots.
Appfigures (via TechCrunch) reported that ChatGPT downloads rose by 28% compared to February, reaching 46 million new installs. This marked the highest monthly figure for ChatGPT to date.
One of the factors contributing to its popularity was the app's feature updates, particularly improvements in image generation, allowing users to create memes and illustrations in the style of Studio Ghibli. Additionally, OpenAI enhanced the voice feature of ChatGPT and lifted some content moderation restrictions. The app's recognition has also contributed to its popularity: ChatGPT has become synonymous with artificial intelligence, much like Google was associated with search in the 2000s.
In March, social apps Facebook and WhatsApp also made it to the top five downloads, while others like Temu, CapCut, Telegram, Snapchat, and Threads entered the top ten.
Overall, the top 10 apps were downloaded 339 million times in March, surpassing February's total of 299 million.
