At the global robotics conference, Chinese company Kaiwa Technology unveiled a pioneering project: a humanoid robot capable of gestating a human embryo until birth. This was reported by Interesting Engineering.
According to the founder, Dr. Zhang Cifen, the device will feature an artificial womb located in the robot's abdominal cavity, where the embryo will develop in a synthetic amniotic environment. Nutrients will be supplied through a specialized tube. Developers claim that the technology is already at a 'mature stage', and the first model of such a robot could be ready by 2026, with an estimated price of $14,000. The company positions the project as an alternative for couples or individuals who wish to avoid biological pregnancy.
However, medical experts criticize the initiative due to a lack of technical details regarding fertilization, embryo implantation, and childbirth processes. Concerns are also raised about the inability to replicate the mother's hormonal balance and establish an emotional bond with the child. Despite the criticism, some supporters view the idea as a potential way to alleviate stress and risks associated with pregnancy. Kaiwa Technology has already begun discussions with regulatory bodies regarding the legal aspects of the project.
