OpenAI has decided to disable the indexing of public ChatGPT dialogues by search engines following a wave of criticism regarding the exposure of confidential information. This was announced by Dane Stacki, OpenAI's chief security officer, on social media platform X.

The feature that allowed search engines to index user conversations in public mode raised significant concerns. Examples of dialogues where individuals reportedly confessed to legal violations or disclosed sensitive business information quickly circulated on social media. Such data could appear in Google search results if published via the public sharing feature.

According to Stacki, indexing of these pages will be prohibited starting August 2, 2025. OpenAI is also exploring additional measures to restrict access to such materials if users inadvertently made them public.

The chat sharing feature was introduced in 2023 as a means for users to share interesting or educational interactions with ChatGPT. However, the company did not anticipate the extent to which public links could spread or be discovered via search engines.

It is also worth noting that OpenAI recently added a new feature to ChatGPT — Study Mode, which enables users to solve tasks step by step.
