Louis von Ahn, the founder of the popular language learning platform Duolingo, believes that artificial intelligence can significantly enhance the learning process. In the near future, AI is expected to become the primary tool in schools, while teachers will mainly serve as mentors and aides. This was reported by Fortune.
Duolingo is actively integrating artificial intelligence into its educational approach. Recently, the company announced it would cease collaboration with humans for creating learning materials, opting instead for AI technologies. According to von Ahn, the platform is used by 116 million people monthly, allowing for 16,000 A/B tests to refine the learning experience.
The Duolingo founder suggests that schools will primarily function as childcare centers, with the educational process largely facilitated by AI. He argues that artificial intelligence can provide a more accurate assessment of a student's skills and better tailor tasks than a teacher managing a classroom of thirty students.
Some educational institutions have already started implementing artificial intelligence in their operations. For example, at the private Alpha School network in the U.S., students learn for two hours a day using AI. Teachers, referred to as guides, are not responsible for teaching or grading but provide motivational and emotional support. The school has four branches and plans to open eight more, with tuition fees ranging from $40,000 to $65,000 per year.
According to von Ahn, changes in the education system will not happen overnight: "Like the government, education changes slowly."
