AI in Film: New Oscar Guidelines

Films produced using artificial intelligence technologies are now eligible for Oscar awards. This announcement was made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as reported by BBC.

The organizers emphasized that AI usage will neither harm nor enhance the chances of nomination. However, the Academy stated that human involvement will still be considered in the selection of winners.

The Academy noted that the recommendation to accept works created with AI tools came from the Scientific and Technical Council.

Several films where AI contributed to the creation of text, images, audio, and video have received prestigious awards in March. Notably, the film "Brutalist" earned Adrien Brody the award for Best Actor.

In this film, generative AI was used to improve the actor's accent when speaking Hungarian.

It was also revealed that voice cloning technology was employed to enhance singing in the Oscar-winning musical "Emilia Perez".

However, the use of artificial intelligence remains contentious among artists.

According to the updated rules, Academy members are now required to watch all nominated films in each category to participate in the final voting stage.

The Academy will verify viewing through its internal streaming platform, Academy Screening Room. If a film is viewed outside the platform, members must submit a form detailing when and where they watched the film.

This process was previously in place for voting in international, animated, and short film categories. Now, this rule will apply to all categories.
