The city of Biuryn in Poland hosted the World Championship in hand-to-hand combat, gathering athletes from 14 countries, including England, Uzbekistan, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Denmark, and the Czech Republic.
Officer Andrii Savenko of the GUR MO of Ukraine won first place in the category up to 80 kg (technique demonstration) and became the world champion in his discipline.
Andrii Savenko is a world champion in military pentathlon, a winner of the World Jiu-Jitsu Cup, and a defender of the Donetsk airport.
Earlier in March this year, he triumphed at the Ukrainian Championship in hand-to-hand combat in memory of Ukraine's Hero Mykola Shapoval, after which he joined the national team.
In addition to his sports achievements, the officer actively promotes patriotic education among the youth: since 2015, he has organized annual sports tournaments in honor of fallen Ukrainian heroes.
Also, at the World Championship in hand-to-hand combat, Ukrainian athlete Mykola Hryhoriak won in the “full contact” category, dedicating his victory to Ukraine's military intelligence officers.
