Today in Kyiv, a ceremony was held at the Central Railway Station to welcome the Ukrainian national fencing team back from the European Championship, which took place in Genoa, Italy, from June 14 to 19. This was reported by Ukrzaliznytsia.
The Ukrainian athletes brought home three medals: two gold and one silver, finishing third in the overall medal standings.
The first medal for Ukraine was earned by fencer Roman Svichkar, who won gold in the individual category, marking the first time in 31 years that Ukraine has won gold in men's foil at the continental level. Silver in the individual competition was awarded to sabre fencer Alina Komashchuk, who made her debut in individual events at the European Championship after several team accolades.
The highlight of the competition was a historic gold in the women's team foil event: Olena Kryvytska, Vlada Kharkova, Inna Brovko, and Anna Maksymenko secured Ukraine's first team victory in this discipline at the European Championships.
As the fencers arrived on the platform, fans, family, and sports officials expressed their pride and emotions. These achievements not only add a glorious chapter to the history of Ukrainian sports but also inspire hope and motivation during these challenging times for the country.
Furthermore, the railway workers presented the athletes with sets of their famous Combat Tea. It can be purchased on trains for 20 UAH, with 5.5 UAH going towards the procurement of FPV drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Combat tea with bergamot or reconnaissance tea with Crimean herbs is available online (through the app, chatbot, or the Ukrzaliznytsia website) or directly on the train (except for Intercity+).
