Navigating Travel with Extended Passports: A Guide for Ukrainians

image

Due to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, many citizens are seeking refuge abroad. A significant change is the extension of the validity of foreign passports, allowing Ukrainians to continue their travels. However, it is essential to assess potential risks and ways to mitigate them before planning a trip.

Where can you travel with an expired passport?

According to new regulations, the validity of foreign passports can be extended for five years. To do this, one must visit a Ukrainian consulate to obtain a special stamp. As per the law, the extension can be done:

  • no earlier than two months before the expiration date;
  • by marking the passport with a special notation that extends its validity.

However, not all EU countries recognize these extended passports. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, many countries have tightened their rules regarding entry documents for Ukrainians. Therefore, it is advisable to check with the embassies of the countries you plan to visit before traveling.

Moreover, airlines are responsible for verifying the validity of passengers' passports, so it’s crucial to clarify their requirements in advance to avoid boarding issues.

How to obtain a new foreign passport?

To avoid any risks, obtaining a new passport is the best option. Ukrainians abroad can do this at embassies or consulates, as well as at branch offices of "Document" in several European countries.

Always carry all necessary documents to confirm your right to stay abroad, as this will help avoid problems in unforeseen circumstances. It’s also essential to check for the latest information regarding required documents before planning your trip.
