Wildfires in Portugal: Alarm and Evacuations

image

On Tuesday, over 1,300 firefighters in central and northern Portugal fought against three significant wildfires, aided by numerous aircraft.

This is reported by Reuters.

In the Aroca area, where the largest fire has been raging since Monday, civil protection services evacuated several dozen residents from their homes and closed the tourist attraction – the Passadicos do Paiva trails. Additionally, since Saturday, a wildfire has been blazing in the Peneda-Gerês National Park near the Spanish border, enveloping nearby villages in thick smoke. Spain has sent several planes to assist in battling the flames in this area. Authorities in Portugal have declared a 'red level' fire danger for most of the country following weeks of hot weather. The hot and dry summer has become typical for the entire Mediterranean region, but in recent years, amid rapid global temperature increases, intensified heatwaves have contributed to devastating wildfires, the article states.
