Trump's Decision to Supply Patriot Systems to Ukraine

On Sunday, July 13, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would supply Ukraine with Patriot missile defense systems. This is a major shift in the policy of his administration, which had halted new weapon supplies since the beginning of his second term.

Speaking to reporters at Andrews Air Force Base, Trump confirmed the decision, stating: «We aren’t paying for them. But we will provide them with the necessary Patriots».

He added: «I haven’t finalized the number yet, but they will receive them because they need protection, and the European Union is covering the costs».

While refusing to specify the exact number of Patriot systems to be sent, Trump emphasized their critical importance, reiterating that Ukraine «will pay us back 100 percent».

The president directly linked this decision to the ongoing military aggression of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, noting: «Because Putin has truly surprised many people... He says nice words but bombs everyone at night, and there is a little problem with that. I don’t like it».

When asked whether his anticipated announcement on new sanctions against Russia would occur on Monday, Trump replied: «We will see what happens tomorrow». This decision to provide Patriots signifies a notable change in Trump's approach, which had been focused on persuading Putin to negotiate.

Trump also confirmed an upcoming meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

A senior administration official informed the Kyiv Post earlier on Sunday that the meeting is expected to continue discussions on coordinating assistance to Ukraine and broader regional security issues.
