Modern Innovations in Passenger Cars: Ukrzaliznytsia Set for Transformation

In 2025, the company "Ukrzaliznytsia" plans to contract 100 modern carriages, including 5 next-generation units – a pilot batch for future scaling.

This was reported by the company’s press service.

The current rolling stock is based on outdated 1970s technologies, using coal heating. The ventilation system only operates while in motion, leading to high operational costs, as typically, two conductors are needed to service one carriage, highlighting its moral obsolescence.

Ukrzaliznytsia representatives state that the 5 new carriages equipped with modern management systems will require less service personnel, have an operational lifespan that is 80% longer, and accommodate up to 44 passengers in a single sleeper carriage.

The new carriages will feature an increased body width and improved layout, allowing the length of sleeping spaces to be extended to 2.2 meters. Equipped with pneumatic suspension, they will ensure a smoother ride and reduce oscillations during travel, as reported by the carrier.

Additionally, the carriages will have automatic sliding doors and airtight inter-carriage transitions at floor level. Control of all systems in the carriages will be conducted from the train manager's cabin.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the new carriages will transition from coal heating to fully electric heating with enhanced individual temperature control in each compartment. The modern system will allow for climate control even during long stops.

The 5 new passenger carriages will be compartment-style with the ability to convert into SV-type carriages. One carriage will be inclusive, equipped with an electric lift, a ramp for high platforms, and a larger compartment for travelers with disabilities.

Moreover, passengers in these carriages will enjoy:

  • USB and type-c sockets with wireless charging for smartphones;
  • a movable table for upper shelves;
  • an additional sink in the corridor of the carriage.

The operational lifespan of these carriages is set at 50 years due to the use of stainless steel in their construction. This is 20 years longer than the standard carriages of Ukrzaliznytsia.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the expected cost of purchasing one carriage will be 95 million 600 thousand hryvnias, which is less than similar purchases made by European railway companies. The cost of servicing one passenger seat in such a carriage remains nearly unchanged, considering the number of seats available.

The delivery timeframe for the carriages is 2.5 years from the moment the manufacturer receives prepayment for their production.
