The exhibition hall of the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has launched an exhibition of icons dedicated to a significant date for the Christian world — the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Council.

This council, which took place in 325 AD in the city of Nicaea (modern Turkey), gathered 318 bishops and marked an important milestone in the history of Christianity.

According to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the council lasted more than two months and adopted 20 canons that defined the foundations of Christian life.

One of the main outcomes of the council was the approval of the Nicene Creed, which Christians proclaim today:

“I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth...”.

This Creed serves as a foundation for many local churches and confirms the apostolic heritage.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate emphasizes the importance of joint celebration of the Resurrection, calling on Christians to adhere to the precepts of the Nicene Council.

At the National Reserve Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the exhibition titled “Holy Trinity, Glory to You” has been opened, featuring icons that illustrate the development of the Trinity iconography.

The exhibition showcases Ukrainian sacred art from the 17th to 18th centuries, which is crucial for preserving cultural identity during contemporary challenges.

Among the exhibits is the icon “Crowning of the Mother of God” from 1732, exemplifying the baroque art of Ukraine.

The exhibition curator, Inna Ivakina, noted that the exhibits required restoration prior to the display.

This exhibition is our response to modern challenges, emphasized Culture Minister Mykola Tochitsky.

The project was implemented with the support of the Svitla.ua Charitable Foundation and Serhov Serhii. The exhibition runs until August 30 in Hall No. 2 of the Assumption Cathedral.
