Today, June 13th, a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the European Union regarding justice and internal affairs is taking place in Luxembourg, where a political decision has been made to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainian citizens until March 4, 2027.
This was reported by the information outlet "European Truth," citing the press service of the EU Council.
Temporary protection for Ukrainians in EU countries will be extended until 2027.
According to the adopted political decision, Ukrainians fleeing from Russian aggression will be able to benefit from temporary protection until March 4, 2027. After this mechanism expires, Ukrainian citizens will have the option to either remain in the host country with a new legal status or return to Ukraine without hindrance.
At the same time, it is noted that the final decision on the extension of temporary protection will be formally approved in the coming weeks.
This delay is due to the necessity of coordinating technical details, such as translating the document into all official EU languages, as reported to the correspondent of "EuroTruth" by the EU Council.
The recommendations of the EU Council to member states regarding further actions after 2027 will also be approved with some delay, again due to the need to address technical issues.
Ukraine has insisted on extending temporary protection until the end of the war.
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshev stated that Ukraine is calling for the continuation of temporary protection status for its citizens in EU countries until the end of hostilities.
Previously, the EU plans to determine the future status of Ukrainian refugees at the EU Council meeting in June 2025.
Currently, the Temporary Protection Directive, established in March 2022 in response to the full-scale invasion of Russia, is in effect for Ukrainians.
This directive guarantees the right to residence, employment, housing, medical and social assistance, as well as education for children. The directive's validity has been extended until March 4, 2026.
