June 6, 2023 marks two years since the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, a disaster that severely impacted the ecology and energy security of southern Ukraine.

This tragedy resulted in devastating consequences: destruction of water resources, halt of navigation, and significant losses for the energy system. Russian troops detonated the dam, leading to a massive ecological disaster.

According to representatives of Ukrhydroenergo, a restoration plan for the station is already in place and will be implemented after the territory is liberated. Building a modern hydropower plant in line with ecological standards will take around five years, while filling the reservoir will require an additional two.

Annual losses from unreceived electricity reach 6-8 billion hryvnias. Sukhetsky emphasized that the international community has not adequately recognized the scale of the tragedy, which further intensifies aggression against Ukrainian infrastructure.

Restoring the Kakhovka HPP is not just a technical task; it is a matter of national security and ecological future.

The Security Service of Ukraine has opened a criminal case regarding the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP, with investigations being conducted under articles concerning violations of the laws of war and ecocide.
