In 2025, six children died in Ukraine due to risky activities on the railway, with another eight sustaining serious injuries.
This information was shared by Vitaliy Romanov, Deputy Head of the Juvenile Police of Ukraine, during an interview on "Suspilne".
These risky activities, known as "catching", involve climbing on train cars to take photos or videos. Another variant includes hanging onto the sides of moving trains.
"The consequences of such activities can be critical, often leading to fatalities. Therefore, we continually stress the importance of preventing these incidents," emphasized Vitaliy Romanov.
He also recounted two unfortunate incidents that occurred in Volyn on the same day, April 20. In one case, a 16-year-old boy was injured after climbing onto a train car.
A few hours later, a 13-year-old boy attempted to film a video from the roof of a train car and ascended using a ladder. Unfortunately, he suffered an electric shock.
"In this instance, the child sustained 80% burns, and his condition is critical; doctors are fighting for his life," noted Vitaliy Romanov.
He added that "catching" is a phenomenon not only prevalent in Ukraine but also in other countries. Often, victims are children from well-off families who had not previously come to the attention of law enforcement.
As a reminder, on March 12 in Kyiv, a 12-year-old boy climbed onto an electric train car and suffered severe burns from an electric shock. Doctors fought for his life for five days, but the teenager passed away.
