The documentary film by Ukrainian director Myroslav Chernov titled "2000 Meters to Andriivka" has won a prestigious award at the CPH:DOX documentary film festival held in Denmark.
It triumphed in the F:ACT AWARD category, as reported on the festival's official website.
"We award the F:ACT to the film "2000 Meters to Andriivka" not only because it reflects a conflict at our doorstep, but also because it is a masterpiece of cinema: a harrowing, multi-layered depiction of war that can be compared to the classic film "All Quiet on the Western Front".
However, this is not World War I; this is today. The absurdity of war and its haunting poetry are fully present here. An artist amidst the bloodshed brings reality home and creates an anti-war film that forces us to reflect on the uniqueness of every lost human life", the jury stated.
The film documents the events of September 2023, when soldiers from the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade fought to liberate the village of Andriivka near Bakhmut. The filmmakers captured every step of the operation.
Chernov worked on this project with the FRONTLINE team and Associated Press for nearly a year and a half. The team involved in the creation of the film includes photographer Oleksandr Babenko, producers Michelle Mizner and Rainy Aronson-Rath.
The score for the film was composed by Grammy-winning composer and music producer Sam Slater (known for "Chernobyl" and "Joker").
"This is a difficult time for Ukraine. It is a challenging time for Ukrainian filmmakers. But right now we are fighting for the truth, for survival, for our stories to be remembered. And this recognition is further proof that we are heard and seen."
…We do not know what awaits us tomorrow, but we know that as long as our voices are heard, we will be alive", wrote Myroslav Chernov after receiving the award.
A total of 71 films were presented at the festival across 6 different categories. The main DOX:AWARD went to the film Always by Deming Chen, chronicling a farming family's life.
It is worth noting that at the end of January, the independent American film festival Sundance showcased clips from the film "2000 Meters to Andriivka".
In 2024, the documentary film by Myroslav Chernov, Yevhen Malolietka, and Vasylysa Stepanenko titled "20 Days in Mariupol" received several awards, including an Oscar, BAFTA, and the audience award at the Sundance festival.
