The Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is heading to the United States for significant strategic negotiations, marking his first visit since the beginning of Donald Trump's second term.
This has been reported by Hurriyet Daily News and other sources.
During his visit on March 25-26, Fidan will meet with Secretary of State Mark Rubio to discuss critical bilateral issues.
Turkish diplomats have indicated that the focus will be on developing strategic initiatives and preparing for future high-level visits.
Shortly prior to this, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had his first phone conversation with Trump.
Key topics of discussion are expected to include efforts to end the war in Ukraine, the situation in Syria, and bilateral relations, particularly in defense cooperation. Fidan also plans to discuss the possibility of lifting American sanctions imposed in 2020 and Turkey's return to the F-35 program after being excluded due to the purchase of the S-400 missile defense system from Russia.
It is noteworthy that the negotiations regarding sanctions lifting and fighter jets were significant for Turkey's support of Finland and Sweden's NATO membership.
Fidan is also expected to emphasize Turkey's peacekeeping initiatives concerning the Russo-Ukrainian war and express readiness to assist U.S. efforts to achieve a peace agreement.
Additionally, he will advocate for the lifting of sanctions on Syria and for cooperation on humanitarian issues.
The discussions will also cover joint actions against ISIS and the control of detainees in Syria, as well as a call for the U.S. to leverage influence over Israel to ensure a lasting ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
