A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at a mosque in Maiduguri, Nigeria, during the evening prayer, leading to the deaths of at least five individuals and injuring 35 others. According to reports from Reuters,
the explosion took place at the Al-Adum mosque around 6 PM local time as congregants gathered for the evening service.
Police have initiated a bomb disposal operation in the area.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attack as 'barbaric and inhuman' and urged increased vigilance in public places during festive periods.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
It is important to note that Islamist insurgents, including Boko Haram and ISWAP, have been conducting a violent campaign against civilians, mosques, and markets in northeastern Nigeria for the past 15 years.
