Greek Farmers Blockade Border in Protest

image

Farmers from Greece have headed to the "Promahonas" border crossing to set up a blockade in protest against rising production costs, low prices, and delays in government payments. As reported by Ekathimerini,
"On Wednesday, protesting farmers made their way to the "Promahonas" crossing between Greece and Bulgaria, despite Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' call against extreme actions", the report states.
It is noted that farmers, livestock breeders, and beekeepers from the northern region of Serres bypassed the police blockade at the Lefkonas intersection on the A25 highway and are heading toward Promahonas.
The farmers' protests are triggered by delays in EU subsidy payments, which are caused by an ongoing investigation into a corruption scandal affecting Greece's agricultural sector. It is expected that the farmers will gather later today to decide on further actions.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated: "Extreme actions, prolonged closures of national roads, customs, and airports are unhelpful measures".
He also emphasized that total state payments to farmers for 2025 will increase by more than 500 million euros compared to 2024, from 3.1 billion to 3.7 billion euros.
Greek farmers clashed with police during protests related to the delayed EU subsidy payments stemming from the corruption investigation.
