On Monday, US Army Secretary Den Driscoll held talks with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, as reported by Reuters.
An anonymous US official indicated that discussions would continue on Tuesday. The composition of the Russian delegation remains unknown.
Driscoll is also set to meet with Ukrainian officials during his stay.
The White House has not commented on this information yet.
Similar details were provided to CBS News by two US officials and two diplomatic sources.
"Driscoll had a lengthy meeting with members of the Russian delegation on Monday evening and plans to meet again on Tuesday to discuss the peace process," a US representative stated.
Over the weekend, Driscoll, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other diplomats took part in discussions in Geneva. The meeting with Russian officials followed Driscoll's visit to Ukraine's capital last week.
US and Ukrainian officials also discussed a potential visit to the US by President Volodymyr Zelensky this week, though no specific plans have been made yet.
A US official mentioned to CBS News that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin seems to believe he can capture the Donetsk region of Ukraine either through negotiations or on the battlefield. According to them, discussions in Geneva began with the notion that Putin is correct.
The latest US peace plan, comprising 28 points, has raised new concerns that the Trump administration might pressure Ukraine into signing an agreement that favors Moscow. Additionally, there is an accompanying document related to security guarantees.
